I'm in Alaska
Yup...I really am! I've been in Juneau for a couple days and still have a couple more here, then we fly on to Anchorage where we plan to road trip on the Kenai Peninsula. I'm traveling with my friend Steve, whose cousin (Scott, along with his wife Kate,) invited us and sent the plane tickets. Pretty nice couple, huh? This is an incredible country and the landscape is beyond description. I've taken over 300 photos in two days, but the pictures just do not do it justice. The immensity of... of... well, the immensity of EVERYTHING is simply incomprehensible. The mountains, the glaciers, the ice field, the rain forest.... amazing.
Today we went hiking behind Scott & Katie's home and within a few steps into the rain forest, it's like a different world. Spanish moss dangles from branches. Giant Skunk Cabbage leaves are bigger than my torso. The earth is spongy and soft. We disturbed a bald eagle from its meal and it careened past us and perched in a tree, twenty feet above our heads. It watched us carefully as we walked up almost directly underneath it.
The weather is cool. I made the right choice to bring all long sleeves. The sky is light until after 10 pm, and as I write this (at 1:45 a.m.) it is actually dark outside. Not for much longer though. The sun will be up in a couple more hours. We've been whale watching, we hiked to the bottom of Mendenhall Glacier and ice field, we've watched salmon fighting their way up stream, we went to a fireworks show at midnight on the 4th. It's an incredible land and a wonderful vacation.
World of Awesomeness, baby! World. of. Awesomeness.
